Emergency Services and Tasmania Police attended a serious crash between a bus and a motorised pushbike in Derwent Terrace at New Norfolk last night.

The accident happened at around 4 pm with Tasmania Police closing roads to all traffic to Derwent Terrace and 4th Avenue while two injured teenagers who were on the bike received treatment.

The rider, a 17 year old suffered critical injuries in the collision with the passenger, an 18 year old is believed to have suffered non life threatening injuries.

The Kinetic School Bus was empty aside from the driver who had just finished his New Town to New Norfolk run and was on his way back to base at the time of the accident.

The bus driver, a man in his 50s was left shaken but uninjured in the crash and the badly damaged bike could be seen laying in front of the bus on the wrong side of the road.

While investigators are working to determine the facts , it appears the bike may have travelled into the oncoming lane and into the path of the bus.

Two witnesses told the Gazette that they saw two young people without helmets riding a motorized bike in the area shortly before the accident.

As tragic as this latest incident is, conversations have again resurfaced in regards to the legalities of petrol powered bike usage and also associated helmet and passenger regulations.

Investigators would like to hear from anyone who has relevant dash cam or other footage of either vehicle before the crash occurred with any witnesses also encouraged to call Tasmania Police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 306-22062026
