The Bushy Park pool could remain closed during the summer.

Its future is under threat with safety concerns, outdated equipment, wastewater issues, parking and running costs cited by the Derwent Valley Council as issues going forward.

The council is set to discuss details in more depth at its monthly meeting on Thursday.

Valley residents, old and new, have come together to question decisions and information put forward when the site was originally only closed after plans were finalised.

Safety concerns were raised in connection with the construction of the new Bushy Park bridge back in 2023.

Locals, in particular, have stood up, putting forward a petition signed by more than 900 people that questions decisions, seeks answers and raises alternative options to try to keep the historical site open.

The Bushy Park War Memorial pool was "built by the community, for the community" and opened back in 1958.

It's not just a pool but a memorial, a health and recreation hub, and a place where many generations and families have come together to learn to swim, rejoice, remember and enjoy.

The council has stated that they'll be discussing options, including pool renovations, alternative recreational uses, memorial space enhancements and any other community infrastructure priorities.

Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said she understands the community's determination to keep the major memorial and recreational asset open after visiting the site in late August.
