A Tasman Peninsula vineyard has been awarded a gold medal for its pinot noir at the National Wine Show of Australia.

Cascades Bay Wines claimed the medal in Class 19 (2023 and Older Pinot Noir) in the invitation-only competition.

The Koonya winery is run by Tanya Dalton and Clinton Mead.

They first planted vines in 2016 after spending 10 years searching for suitable land.

“This top gold-medal recognition is incredibly rewarding for our whole family,” Mr Mead said.

“We’re a very small operation, and we’re so appreciative of our daughters, extended family and friends who have helped us every year since planting.

“To represent Tasmania and receive a gold medal alongside some outstanding wineries is exciting.”

Ms Dalton said the award reflects years of patience, love of the land, consistency and community support.

“This wine represents an enormous amount of hard work from many people behind the scenes.”
