Fuel excise halved and heavy road user charge reduced to zero
The fuel excise will be halved, resulting in petrol prices being slashed by 26 cents a litre.
Diesel has risen above $3 a litre, while unleaded is sitting around $2.50 due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Along with halving the fuel excise, the federal government has reduced the heavy road user charge to zero for the next three months to support truck drivers.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff welcomed the changes.
“The Prime Minister’s agreement to reduce the fuel excise is a positive step that will make a genuine difference for families right across Tasmania,” Mr Rockliff said.
“For many Tasmanians, especially those in regional areas who rely heavily on their vehicles, fuel costs are a significant part of weekly household expenses.
"Any reduction at the bowser will help ease pressure on family budgets and on businesses trying to manage higher operating costs.”
Mr Rockliff said the outcome was an example of different levels of government working together.
“While fuel prices are influenced by global factors beyond Australia’s control, governments can and should step in where possible to provide practical relief.
"This measure will help commuters, families, freight operators and regional industries at a time when it’s most needed.”
