A need for regional volunteers

Volunteer firefighters make up around 95% of Tasmania’s firefighting workforce. With more than 200 brigades across the state—many located in rural and remote communities—volunteers are the backbone of the TFS.

Like many emergency service organisations across Australia, the TFS is facing increasing challenges in maintaining volunteer numbers, particularly in smaller towns. Population shifts, greater work commitments, and the pace of modern life have all contributed to declining recruitment in recent years.

No Experience Needed

No prior firefighting experience is required to become a TFS volunteer and opportunities extend well beyond the fireground. There are positions available in logistics, administration, community engagement, and more.

“Whether you’re on the hose line or supporting your brigade behind the scene, , you’re making a difference ,” said Regional Volunteer Stakeholder Engagement Officer, Jason Clarke.  “Some people can’t commit to active firefighting, but they still have skills and time to give. Every volunteer strengthens their local brigade.” “All training and protective equipment are provided, with a strong emphasis on safety, support, and flexibility to accommodate other commitments”.

Inspiring Tasmanians to Act

Volunteering with the TFS is achievable, meaningful, and needed now more than ever – especially in our regional communities

It builds sense of community pride and resilience - something Tasmanians have demonstrated time and again during bushfires and other emergencies.

“We know Tasmanians care deeply about their communities,” said Mr Clarke. “Volunteering with TFS is one of the most powerful ways to give back.”
