Revised King Island racing season dates announced

The reduced schedule for King Island’s upcoming racing season has been announced, with the traditional Boxing Day and New Year’s Day meets axed.
January 3, 17, 24 and 31 have been flagged as the four racing meeting dates for the 2026 season.
A TasRacing spokesperson said the confirmation of the dates was subject to transport availability.
“If required, the January 3 meeting may be rescheduled to January 10 to accommodate freight logistics.”
The final confirmation of the races is expected to occur on August 25.
The King Island Racing Club (KIRC) has been plagued by a shortage of horses and trainers over the last few seasons.
At its recent annual general meeting on August 6, it was revealed there were only ten thoroughbreds and five to six pacers confirmed for the 2026 season.
A $500 per-start subsidy will be made available to trainers for all horses competing in 2026, with payments made out after each race meeting.
Last season, the KIRC paid each trained and raced horse a $1250 subsidy.
