The Sorell Council is partnering with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to deliver a pilot research project exploring how community nest boxes can support local bird habitats.

Residents in Dodges Ferry, Carlton, Primrose Sands and Connellys Marsh can build and host one of up to 20 nest boxes while contributing observations to the pilot research project—expressions of interest close on October 30, with practical workshops in November and December.

Sorell Mayor Janet Gatehouse said participants will receive practical guidance on building and positioning their nest box and will make occasional observations once it is installed.

“This project brings together some great things – supporting our local birdlife, learning new skills and bringing people together around something positive for our local environment,” Cr Gatehouse said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing residents get involved and learning more about the birds that share our Southern Beaches communities.”

Niklavs Rubenis from UTAS said the project will help build knowledge about bird-specific nest box design, placement, orientation, monitoring and ongoing care in Southern Tasmania.

“Nest boxes can provide additional nesting opportunities where suitable habitat exists, but there is still plenty to learn about where they are most effective and how birds use them," Dr Rubenis said.

“Working directly with residents allows us to explore this in a practical, community-based way.”
