I am a veterinarian that has worked in aquaculture throughout the world for over 30 years, including the Tasmanian salmon industry.
Having now had the opportunity to read the letter that the Premier sent to Salmon Tasmania, I am appalled that a political party would give any Industry such caute blanche and the promise of unrestricted development. This is just not sustainable, and was demonstrated in Chile over 10 years ago when their salmon industry had to completely restructure following a period of radid unmanaged growth that led to the emergence of disease. If the salmon industry is to survive long term, it needs to completely restructure and improve it's procedures.
Lets hope this proposed review has some positive outcomes that allows the industry to remain in a sustainable form well into the future. Unfortunately, previous reviews have not been successful in producing such change, mainly because of the power this industry exerts over political parties.
