In response to Mr Calmans and others comments ,the control of deer and game is done mainly by licensed recreation hunters and the continued broadcasting of large numbers of deer leave many hunters questioning the alarmists predictions. Deer have been in Tasmania for around 190 years and were seen as a status value on many properties ,farmers did and still do on many properties charge the hunter access to hunt them, many properties trapped and farmed them and sold them to other deer farms at considerable prices, the cost to fence them in was rarely mentioned but is out of the question if suggested to fence them out of pivots or crops that in most cases border game habitats , properties that need to control deer are now doing so under the current special purpose permit that is issued for that purpose, no different than the farmers requiring a wallaby or possum control permit. If hunters are denied access to properties and those that do are charged a property fee on top of the considerable cost of fuel and ammunition to control the farmers game it is understandable deer numbers may be increasing on some properties. The push to deregulate deer will only derail properties currently controlling deer and game under successful Base management plans and without the traditional regulated season the incentive to control farmers game would be completely eroded. Some years ago the ABC aired a story on the so called deer problem, a prominent land owner from the midlands was speaking to a girl from the university of Tasmania explaining the so called damage the deer were doing to the environment, but it’s ironic he failed to mention the impact by him clearing thousands of acres for pivot irrigated crops, hundreds of acres under water for dams to supply them , past deer farm and park projects and the thousands of dollars received by hunters to hunt them,. The false alarmist propaganda broadcasted by certain parties for the purpose of self interested agendas is not going to achieve a balanced outcome , a deer management plan was implemented at taxpayer funds with restrictions considerably relaxed to address deer control but is being completely ignored before any results have been released.
