New Norfolk intersection in the spotlight with mayor's motion

Road safety at the intersection of Burnett Street, George Street and "The Avenue" at New Norfolk looks set to be assessed.
An increase in traffic accidents and near misses in the area has caused community concern, with the issue put forward to the Derwent Valley Mayor and Council.
On the back of that, Mayor Michelle Dracoulis launched a Notice of Motion prior to the DVC's July meeting asking for an urgent review, which was then unanimously supported by council.
The motion asks for a full assessment and advice on the intersection's traffic conditions, speed limits, pedestrian safety and accident history. Advice on improvements like adding speed humps, chicanes or a roundabout or adding more road signs and markings, street lights or pedestrian crossings will then be considered.
Costs associated with the work needed to improve the area will also be addressed, and funding could also be considered and possibly included in the DVC's mid-year budget review.
Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis thanked everyone who had raised their concerns, "This was an important first step towards making one of New Norfolk’s busiest intersections safer for everyone".
One longtime resident of the area said, “It's always been a dangerous intersection and even more so with ' Woollies' and 'Maccas' there. Combine that with more people using the roads and lots of school kids around as well".
Valley Locals have been quick to call for similar action to be taken at the intersection at the end of the New Norfolk Bridge opposite the Eagle Snack Bar, which is another notorious area for accidents.
