Thieves target Malbina Cemetery
Thieves have targeted the Malbina Cemetery near Molesworth.
Gravesite thieves have taken grave stone plaques, personal items, flowers, children's toys and lights.
Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said the thefts were unacceptable.
“We can’t replace what’s been taken, but we can take action to protect the living, and those who rest in peace in our care,” Cr Dracoulis said.
"Our cemeteries are places of memory, grief, and quiet connection, and they matter deeply to the families and friends who visit them, often carrying more than most people can see.
“I’ll be pushing for stronger measures to protect Malbina Cemetery, including appropriate surveillance cameras and safeguards.”
In 2022, thieves stole six crepe myrtle trees worth $2500 that had recently been planted at Malbena Cemetery, and multiple gravesite thefts have been reported since from Malbena and from other cemeteries at Red Hills- Bushy Park, North Crescent, New Norfolk and the Tyenna cemetery on Gordon River Road.
Derwent Valley residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour at any cemetery to Tasmania Police and Crime Stoppers, with severe penalties for anyone caught stealing from these sacred sites.
