Around 100 penguins found dead on King Island

Around 100 penguins have been found dead on King Island.

This brings the island’s recent penguin death toll to around 150.

The penguins were found at Stokes Point, on the southern tip of King Island, during ongoing wildlife monitoring activities.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, and the birds were assessed after their discovery but were not considered suitable for H5 bird flu testing because of their decayed condition.

"PWS is working with relevant agencies to assess the circumstances surrounding the discovery and determine whether any further management actions are required," PWS North West Regional Manager Brendon Clark said.

"Any loss of wildlife is concerning, and we recognise this discovery will be upsetting for residents, visitors and others who care deeply about Tasmania's unique wildlife.

"While assessments of the site have identified injuries on many of the birds, it is not possible to definitively determine the cause of death from the information currently available.

"We will continue to monitor the site and surrounding area and work closely with partner agencies as part of ongoing wildlife health surveillance activities."

Mr Clark said NRE Tas is investigating urgent options to undertake enhanced cat control at key penguin habitat locations on King Island, with a range of feral cat management activities already underway.

"We remain committed to protecting native species and supporting measures that improve outcomes for wildlife on King Island.”
