A 14-year-old planning to climb a Himalayan mountain more than 6000 metres above sea level to raise money for cancer has arrived in Nepal.

James Repine is raising money for the Leukemia Foundation after his mother was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a rare form of blood cancer, in December 2024.

His father Blake, who is also the general manager of the Tasman Council, said they were very close to beginning their journey.

“What began as an idea between a father and son has grown into a community effort that has reached people across Tasmania and beyond,” Blake said.

“Even more incredibly, we learned on arrival in Kathmandu that we’ve reached our fundraising goal of $20,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

“The support from friends, family, local businesses, and the broader community has been overwhelming, and we’re deeply grateful.”

Blake said the pair are beginning the trek towards Everest Base Camp ahead of their climb on Lobuche East.
