Trefusis Fine Wool and Poll Merino Stud at Ross has dominated the wool judging at Campbell Town Show this morning, taking out the Grand Champion fleece and a swathe of ribbons across several categories.

The sheep that manager Georgina Wallace prepares for shearing are kept undercover in a shed for about six months and this year’s winning fleece weighed in at 9.8kg (68 per cent).

Marked out of 10 by judges, it scored 9 for trueness of type, 8 for conformity of length, 10 for soundness, 8 for colour, 7 for character and 8 for evenness.

“When I was getting this fleece together I knew it would be fairly competitive,” Georgina said.

“The stud is my passion, and everything to do with the sheep and merino industry, so this is a great result.

“It’s a wonderful lead-up to the Bendigo Sheep Show in July.”

Today’s result is the 10th time Trefusis has won Grand Champion Fleece with the latest entry coming from a ram that was in the show team at last year’s show before being sold to Dennis Kline of Oatlands.

Trefusis also won the Champion Housed Ram and Tasmanian Pair of the Year, and all of its sheep and ewes won a class and will be coming up against each other this afternoon as judging continues.

Nan Bray of White Gum Wool, south of Oatlands, took home the Vitale Barberis Canonico Wool Fleece Award for the best wool fleece 18.5 micron or finer.

Presented by representative and wool buyer Andrew Raeber of VBC Wool, the fleece will be purchased for use in fine European suits.

The Campbell Town Show continues tomorrow where the winning fleeces will be on display in the Wool Pavilion.
