Southern Airlines has announced it will cease its Tasmanian operations from 30 June 2026 as part of a nationwide business restructure.

In a letter to customers and suppliers dated 10 June, the company said the decision followed a strategic review of its operations across Australia and was aimed at streamlining the business and ensuring its long-term viability.

The company acknowledged the importance of its Tasmanian operations and thanked customers, suppliers and staff for their support over the years.

To ensure continuity of service, Southern Airlines said it had entered into an arrangement with Bass Strait Airlines Pty Ltd, which will take over services currently provided in Tasmania.

The announcement said Bass Strait Airlines is sufficiently resourced to handle all current Southern Airlines services in the state and has extensive experience in the Tasmanian aviation market.

Southern Airlines said it expects the transition to be seamless for customers, with Bass Strait Airlines providing services that meet or exceed existing service levels.

The company will also work with suppliers to finalise contracts, outstanding invoices and the winding down of its Tasmanian operations before the end of June.

Bass Strait Airlines chief executive officer Colin Tucker joined Southern Airlines Group director David Woodland in signing the announcement, which confirmed Bass Strait Airlines will assume responsibility for the services currently operated by Southern Airlines in Tasmania.
