Sea Forest signs European distribution agreement

Tasmanian-based startup Sea Forest has signed a distribution deal with Dutch animal nutrition company Offra to sell its product in Europe.
Founded by Sam Elsom, Sea Forest has been utilising Asparagopsis, a type of seaweed, to produce a livestock feed supplement that reduces methane emissions in cattle.
The two companies have already collaborated for several years for trials with universities and with industry stakeholders in Europe.
Mr Elsom said he was excited to access the third-largest beef production market in the world.
“Our deep understanding of the bio-actives found in Asparagopsis is having a global impact and addresses an urgent worldwide need to reduce methane emissions,” he said.
“Connecting with a specialist in animal feed additives with Orffa allows Sea Forest to reach out to industry partners and stakeholders across the European continent."
Orffa Marketing & Innovation Director Arno van der Aa said Sea Forest’s feed supplement was a game-changer.
“Orffa has always been an innovative player in the animal feed industry, recognising future industry needs,” Mr van der Aa said.
“As methane reduction initiatives are receiving more interest, this is the moment for Sea Forest’s market entrance.
“We have worked already for years on this challenge, and based on our findings, we believe that together with Sea Forest we can bring a unique and highly effective solution to market that can fill a growing need.”
Sea Forest recently laid off 10 staff as it transitioned from its research phase into commercially producing Asparagopsis.
