Police have located the body of a male swimmer who was missing in the Derwent River at New Norfolk.

The Derwent Valley is in shock after the news that a man has died whilst swimming in the Derwent River at New Norfolk on Monday evening.

Emergency Services including Tasmania Police, the Westpac Search and Rescue Helicopter, Marine & Rescue Services and the Tasmanian SES were called at around 7 pm after reports that the man was in distress and had gone missing whilst swimming near the pontoons on the New Norfolk Esplanade.

The Westpac Search and Rescue Helicopter was seen searching the river up until around 8.40 pm before leaving and Police Divers took over and sadly it was announced that the man's body was found at around 9.40 pm.

It's not certain the exact circumstances surrounding the man's death but at the time of the incident it was noted that the river's flow was strong from an outgoing tide.

Tasmania Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance at the scene and a report is being prepared for the coroner. The Derwent Valley extends condolences to the man's family, friends and loved ones for their loss.
