Hoons vandalise Tynwald Park
Hoons have damaged Tynwald Park oval in New Norfolk after a late night skid session on Saturday, forcing the New Norfolk Junior Football Club to divert Sunday morning games to Boyer Oval.
A four-wheel drive vehicle was used to enter the oval where the culprits went on to skid and tear up the grassed surface in a blatant act of vandalism, which also included damaging a fence.
Another grassed area near the New Norfolk Sports Centre was also damaged on the same night with locals again calling for action and a greater police presence in the municipality.
Camera footage has been obtained and forwarded onto Tasmania Police with locals also calling for areas to be "gated" to restrict access during particular times of a day.
Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis in a statement said "It doesn’t get more pathetic than destroying kid’s footy grounds the night before game day and we also have damage in front of the Sports Centre".
"We've had enough!!" Mayor Dracoulis went on to say.
"I’m even having to discourage locals from taking matters into their own hands, good people who’ve had a gutful and want to keep our community safe".
"Where are our protections? Give us police to arrest these idiots, crush their cars, take their bikes and protect the 99% of us who do the right thing" Mayor Dracoulis said.
The New Norfolk Junior Football Club also released a statement saying "Overnight the wilful, reckless, blatant and deliberate act of vandalism against our home ground at Tynwald Park has left our club saddened by the disrespect that some in our community feel they are entitled to".
"This has set us back, and we will be pursuing those responsible for the cost of repairs, the financial losses and inconveniences to the club with all games cancelled at Tynwald Park and all nightly training currently suspended until further notice".
Anyone with information is urged to call Tasmania Police on 131444.
