The Central Plateau Conservation Area west of Highland Lakes Road and south of Lake Augusta Road will be closed to allow for deer control operations between 28 April to 1 June 2025 inclusive.

The operations are focused on the Central Plateau Conservation Area within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and are aimed at reducing the population to protect the Walls of Jerusalem National Park.

The program targets are to eradicate additional deer from the area, building on past campaigns that saw over 1000 deer removed.

The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) will use thermal-assisted aerial shooting, enabling accurate detection and identification of deer in the landscape.

Volunteer shooters will also undertake ground operations with the support of PWS.

To help ensure the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained, a qualified veterinarian will be employed to independently oversee the operation.
