Gun law changes must be "careful and considered": Premier
Any changes to gun laws in the wake of the Bondi massacre must be "careful, considered and responsible", Premier Jeremy Rockliff said today.
The Premier made the remarks in open letter to the Tasmanian community, one week on from the shocking attack.
"As part of the response, National Cabinet has outlined a review of firearms laws", Premier Rockliff said.
"We need to do so in a careful, considered and responsible manner.
"Law abiding firearm owners must be able to continue their work and their recreation."
The comments come after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Friday a $1 billion national gun buy-back, with the costs to be shared between the Federal and State Governments - implying that the Tasmanian Government had agreed to the Scheme.
Also on Friday, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced firearms changes for that state, including imposing a cap of four firearms per individuals, with "strict exemptions" for primary primary producers and sports shooters, who may hold a maximum of 10 firearms.
Additionally, NSW proposes reclassifying straight-pull/pump-action and button/lever release firearms into Category C, limiting their access primarily to primary producers.
It is unclear whether the Tasmanian Government intends to mirror these changes.
