Gun law changes must be "careful and considered": Premier
Any changes to gun laws in the wake of the Bondi massacre must be "careful, considered and responsible", Premier Jeremy Rockliff said today.
The Premier made the remarks in open letter to the Tasmanian community, one week on from the shocking attack.
"As part of the response, National Cabinet has outlined a review of firearms laws", Premier Rockliff said.
"We need to do so in a careful, considered and responsible manner.
"Law abiding firearm owners must be able to continue their work and their recreation."
The comments come after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Friday a $1 billion national gun buy-back, with the costs to be shared between the Federal and State Governments - implying that the Tasmanian Government had agreed to the Scheme.
Also on Friday, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced firearms changes for that state, including imposing a cap of four firearms per individuals, with "strict exemptions" for primary primary producers and sports shooters, who may hold a maximum of 10 firearms.
Additionally, NSW proposes reclassifying straight-pull/pump-action and button/lever release firearms into Category C, limiting their access primarily to primary producers.
It is unclear whether the Tasmanian Government intends to mirror these changes.

Gun law reform
Jeremy Rocklif will find a way to backflip on his earlier comments. So he can fit in with the mainland agenda. WA , QLD & NSW have been trying for a few years to find ways of removing gun's from everyone.
Common sense
The first premier to have any common sense on the matter
I think the liberals need to…
I think the liberals need to step back and think a little harder before making any decisions. As there will be a lot of law abiding firearm owners affected. If I am I will not vote liberal again. Look at the back lash in NSW . Jeremy Rockliff can’t afford that here.
Keep the Australian way.
The 2 people that shot those poor souls was not a farmer or duck shooter, roo shooter, pig shooter or clay bird shooter. They were radicalised terrorists. Get rid of them, not the guns.
Gun laws
Lu you are absolutely correct. So far gun laws have worked ok. These radicals will find another way to be aggressive regardless of any law. Once again the law abiding citizens are being punished for these mongrels behaviour. They claim to come to Australia for a peaceful life, then why bring your violence and shit with you?
Firearm law reform
Nothing should be done until this whole situation has been investigated thoroughly, a Royal Commission is warranted with the disclosure of the internal Labor rejection of the Segals Anti Semitism report by the Labor Federal Wentworth Branch , influenced by the ABC !! The facts emerging of the gross incompetence of not just the PM , Wong and Burke but the NSW police after being apparently informed by ASIO years ago of these extremists…😳. Ask yourself if it was a domestic violence report how long does that take to action ???….. see what Josh Frydenberg is saying…. He is 100 💯 correct.
This whole situation is disgraceful and cost so many innocent lives… Albonese and his crew backed by the left wing Anti Semitism. Greens are trying to hang this on Law Abiding Firearm Owners who had absolutely nothing to do with this . A ROYAL COMMISSION 👍
BIG MISTAKE
JEREMY,DO NOT GO ALONG WITH THE GUN REFORM.GUNS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, you are targeting and penilising the law the law abiding citizens and firearm owners of Tasmania.Every politician who supports the firearms reform, start thinking of your political career, JEREMY i voted for you in the last election, if you continue to support the firearms reform you will definitely lose my vote.
Firearms
If you outlaw guns, only outlaws have guns.
Granting licences to non Australians citizens
It's clearly in view that the Labor government laps our national security in border's and migration security,,,my views and opinions are It's this federal Labor government has failed in all national security and the safety of all Australian citizens by weakening our security then have the audacity to punish law-abiding firearm holder's to hide the fact of THE federal Labor governments incompetence towards that terrible day in NSW AND AUSTRALIANS SAFETY,,,,I am very concerned about my sport in SSAA with military combined services, have been a professional target shooter since 2009 ,have achieved lots of awards throughout my beloved sport,my achievements are .
Second in Australia top gun for combined services.
7 times champion in Tasmania military combined services.
A national proficiency award for combat pistol.
And also won state medals for combined services in pistol shooting,,,in my thoughts and also many other professional target SSAA shooter's are thinking the same that our beloved sport will be at a loss and no longer will be able to complete and enjoy our sport,,,I certainly hope that Jeremy our great premier will not take action in this and consider on saying NO to this corrupt federal government .
Gun ownership
No need to change the laws only need to act on current laws. Deportations and removal of illegal firearms. Law abiding citizens are not the problem. Must fix the hatred that is eroding Australia
He will uck it up 2
He will uck it up 2
Vote 1
If Jeremy can see past the nonsense thats happening on the mainland he will have mine and many others votes for a long time! Even worst case changing categories for button release etc wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. But do not put a limit on how many guns we can have, I know some elderly people that live for collecting firearms and shooting in general and it would put them in an early grave. Not to mention how it affects small buisness, locally made products local freight and everything else that goes down the chain that supports the TASMANIAN economy!
Gun law reform
Premier Rockliff needs to remember his government is a minority government
I for one and imagine most firearm owners in Tasmania will make him pay at the next election if he makes our already tough firearms legislation even tougher for law abiding hunters and sporting shooters
We are not to blame for the Bondi tragedy if anyone is it’s the Albanese government for this anti semitism being allowed to fester in Australia
