Last year's Huon Show

More than 12,000 people are expected to flock to the Huon Show on November 16 for what will be Lisa Plohl’s last as president of the Huon Agricultural Society.

Ms Plohl said highlights included equestrian, the dog high jump and kelpie demonstrations, with entry numbers for the poultry and sheep competitions on the rise.

“It’s always very difficult coming back after covid,” she said.

“We didn’t do a show for two years and this is our third show after covid.

“And since then, it has been harder.”

Ms Plohl said the demographics of the Huon Valley had changed.

“There are fewer people involved in agriculture down here and we don’t have the dairies anymore.

“We don’t have a sale here anymore because of the decrease in cattle, as we always used to do an auction with fat cattle.

“A lot of the bigger farms down here have been split up and we are seeing more hobby farms.”

The Huon Show will also host the hobby horse state championship.

“We started the hobby horse section last year just to fill in something for the arena,” Ms Plohl said.

“It was very popular last year, so it’s coming back again this year, and we have some big plans for next year.”

Ms Plohl, who is currently in her second term as president of the Huon Agricultural Society, plans to step down.

“A president would normally only do two years, but next June I would have been president for six years.

“I think it’s just time for me to step aside and let someone else take a turn.

“But I definitely won’t be leaving the committee.”

Next year’s show will coincide with the Huon Agricultural Society’s 80th anniversary.
