Mayor's Report - Community turns out to honour those who made ultimate sacrifice

IT was pleasing to see such a large crowd present to commemorate Anzac Day at the Nubeena Cenotaph. About 200 people gathered at the morning service to remember the service and sacrifice of our Servicemen and Women over the many conflicts and theatres of war since WW1.
RAAF 29 Squadron (City of Hobart) was represented by Executive Officer, Squadron Leader Dave North. Squadron Leader North laid a wreath on behalf of the RAAF at the morning service and later attended the Tasman Ex-Services Club. He enjoyed the opportunity to meet Tasman residents and visitors and spoke glowingly of the new connections he made with our community. Squadron Leader North also joined me in taking the salute from the Veterans March upon their arrival at the cenotaph.
A highlight of the morning service was a fly-past by a 36 Squadron C17A Globemaster. Captained by Flight Lieutenant Andrew Muhl, with Co-Pilot Flying Officer Chris Wettenhall, the 70 tonne-capacity, heavy lift aircraft banked and flew low above the tree tops as it passed overhead. 36 Squadron is based at RAAF Amberley in Queensland.
Earlier in the day residents and visitors attended the Dawn Service, also led by Tasman RSL Sub-Branch President, Gordon Osmond. Thank you to Gordon and his committee members for their dedication and organisational skills in delivering a very fitting commemoration to the fallen as well as recognising serving and former service personnel. In his dawn and morning service addresses, Alan Marshall paid tribute to the sacrifice and service of medical personnel across the various branches of our defence force.
