New $2.5 million agriculture centre promised for Scottsdale High
A new $2.5 million agricultural learning centre will be built at Scottsdale High School if the Liberal Party is re-elected on July 19.
Announcing the election promise today, Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the facility would enhance the school’s capacity to deliver its Certificate II in Agriculture program to students.
“Scottsdale High has students from Waterhouse to Herrick,” Mr Rockliff said.
“Farming and agriculture are in their blood, and Tasmania is better off for it.
“We have some of the best produce and livestock in the nation, and this facility will help ensure we have skilled staff to capitalise on this for generations to come.
“Currently, students undertaking agricultural studies don't have a fit-for-purpose classroom on the school farm, limiting the potential for delivery of modern agricultural education and contemporary hands-on learning.”
Education Minister Jo Palmer said the new learning centre would provide students with industry-relevant skills and provide a pathway for future studies.
“We have really listened to the voices of the agriculture students at Scottsdale school who were advocating for more facilities near the farm,” Ms Palmer said.
"As part of the learning centre, we are delighted to announce a wet weather shelter and enclosed canteen space will be delivered as part of this facility.
“Importantly, the new facility will also serve the wider community, including partnerships with services groups and agricultural organisations.
“It will also build on similar facilities we’ve delivered in Campbell Town and Bothwell.”
The $2.5 million for the new agricultural learning centre at Scottsdale High School will come from the Liberals’ Vocational Education and Training Facilities Fund.
