Repairs to John Duigan vessal impacts freight services to King Island
King Island’s vital shipping link will run two back-to-back freight services next week after Bass Island Line cancelled this week’s sailing due to repairs on the John Duigan.
The interruption comes just a fortnight before Christmas during one of the island’s busiest freight periods.
Minor hull damage was identified during routine checks, prompting the vessel to remain in Devonport while repairs and survey inspections are carried out.
With poor weather later this week and an existing commercial booking at Grassy Wharf, TasPorts says there was no safe window to bring a vessel in earlier.
To maintain freight flow, BIL has scheduled two services for next week instead of the usual single sailing.
TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald said the temporary setback was being managed to minimise disruption for island businesses and residents.
“We recognise how essential this link is for the island,” Mr Donald said.
“Running two services next week ensures we can move freight efficiently while repairs are completed safely.
“We appreciate the collaboration and support shown by our customers as we work through this issue.
“I also want to recognise the significant efforts of the Bass Island Line team, who have responded quickly to adjust schedules, support customers and progress the repairs.”
