Southern Open Vineyard weekend sees wineries open doors
A record 53 wine producers will open their doors during this week’s Southern Open Vineyards Weekend (February 27-March 1).
Now in its 29th year, the showcase will include some vineyards launching their wines and cellar doors for the very first time.
WineSouth president Mark McNamara said southern Tasmania has developed into a truly world-class wine touring destination.
“This year we are excited to showcase mor than 50 of the best wine producers in the region,” Mr McNamara said.
“With thirty of the participating producers not open year-round, this is a rare and unique opportunity for visitors to explore the broad diversity of wines in Southern Tasmania.”
Mr McNamara said this year’s event sees established producers Mapleton and Stargazer opening new tasting facilities in the Coal River Valley.
“We will also see several new producers, including the architecturally-inspired Sisu, Petrichor and Birdhill Vineyards in the Coal River Valley.
“By Chance Wines, Future Perfect and the historic Mount Direction Estate have also joined in the Hobart region, adding to the terrific diversity of the lineup.”
Southern Open Vineyards is designed as a wine touring event, where visitors can spend a day, or two or three exploring the five sub-regions of the South East (Tasman), Coal River Valley, Huon Valley, Derwent Valley and D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
Mr McNamara said visitors are invited to wander through the vineyards, chat with winemakers, and taste wines where they are created.
“From hidden boutique gems to award- winning estates, there will be some seriously good options to choose from - both for dedicated wine enthusiasts looking to explore new-release and vintage wines, or families and friends looking for a fun day out.”
