After a crisp start, the sun continued to shine over Quercus Park today attracting 18,198 through the gates to enjoy a day filled with good eating, shopping and entertainment.

Patrons’ arms were full, as were the streets, and Gumboot Day returned this year to promote the work of Rural Alive and Well (RAW) with young people in our rural communities.

Two farmers who drew plenty of onlookers for unexpected reasons were Jim McCauley of Launceston and Peter Bignell of Kempton, who spent the day working on their stunning sand sculpture.

Because we were right near the equestrian arena we decided to do a steam punk horse,” Peter said.

“It’s made out of bricklayer’s sand, not beach sand, so it’s got a bit of clay in it.

“Basically we never grew up!”

Woolworths store manager Wesley Polden judged the Gumboot Parade and then launched the Woolworths Young Farmer of the Year Competition for 2025.

“We are extremely proud to be a part of this prestigious competition,” he said.

“We value the opportunity to assist with the development of young Tasmanians.”

This competition is open to all young Tasmanians aged between 15 - 30, if you would like more information or to enter go to www.ruralyouth.com.au.

Run-offs will be held on July 26 with the top ten going through to the finals on August 23.

All features at Agfest today drew big audiences with the equestrian and working dog arenas being particularly popular.

The inaugural Caravan and Camping Show was a hit, as was the MAST Boat Show, and the appearance of Bluey and Bingo thrilled all the youngsters.
