Tasmania's top potato growers recognised

Damon Addison and Richard Heazlewood have been named Young Growers of the Year at Simplot Australia’s Annual Grower Awards held at Devonport’s Paranaple Centre.
The young growers were acknowledged for their innovation, sustainability practices, and leadership potential, with Director Raw Procurement Global Agricultural Services Les Murdoch singing the praises of the emerging farmers.
“It’s inspiring to see the passion and ingenuity coming through in the next generation - they’re not just continuing a legacy - they’re redefining it,” he said.
Recognising outstanding contributions to the 2024–2025 harvest season, the awards have been held since 1997, and shine a spotlight on the dedication, innovation and resilience of local growers.
This year’s event brought together growers from the Ulverstone, Scottsdale, and Midlands regions, with awards presented across multiple categories including Best Grower, Top Harvester, Young Grower of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Industry.
Potato Contractor of the Year went to Scott Rockcliff of Skelbrook Produce, North West Potato Grower of the Year was Michael Nichols of Redbank Farming, Scottsdale Potato Grower of the Year was Heath Rattray of Rattray CL NE & HM Pty Ltd , Midlands Potato Grower of the Year was Mark French of Cliston Pty Ltd, Seed Potato Grower of the Year was Graeme Combes of Combes G & G, North West Vegetable Grower of the Year was Caitlin Radford of Radco Agriculture Pty Ltd and Midlands Vegetable Grower of the Year was Mark French of Cliston Pty Ltd.
Mr Murdoch said the Awards are a proud tradition that celebrates more than just yield.
“These Awards are about recognising the people behind the produce, the families, the innovators, and the next generation of growers who are shaping the future of Australian agriculture,” Mr Murdoch said.
“We’re proud to work alongside more than 300 growers across Tasmania who supply over 400,000 tonnes of fresh produce each year.
“Their commitment ensures Australians continue to enjoy the quality they expect from trusted brands like Birds Eye and Edgell.”
Each winner received a travel voucher as a token of appreciation for their efforts during the season.
Individuals who provided extended service and continue to build and share knowledge that advances the potato and vegetable industry and agriculture across Tasmania were recognised with Service Awards.
The Award for Services to the Potato and Vegetable Industry went to John Cresswell and the Agricultural Service Award for Excellence went to Bernie Prins.
As Australia's last major frozen vegetable processor, Simplot sources 400,000 tonnes of Australian grown vegetables every year from our Australian growers.
