Reading through all the comments here, I think the general position is pretty clear and wonder if the Tasmanian Government truly will listen.
The consensus overwhelmingly rejects ANY changes to the existing licencing laws, however there is a lot of support for increased penalties for theft and posession of stolen firearms.
I generally concur with these positions, however would also like to see the Airsoft or "gel blasters" licensing requirements removed entirely as it is in QLD. These are nothing more than toys and that they are restricted in any way is ridiculous in the extreme.
I am so grateful I don't reside in NSW where they have ignored public concerns and introduced the caps which, as others have said, are completely unnecessary and onerous to legitimate firearm owners. I participate in both club and recreational shooting. As part of the club shooting, I am actively involved in SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), most commonly known as "western action" or "cowboy action". I require 4 firearms just to participate in these competitions, none of which are suitable for my recreational shooting. At least an additional two are required for that, minimum. I am also considering becoming involved with metallic silhouette which will require another.
I summary, leave existing licencing as is (or relax it further) but increase penalties around stolen firearms exponentially.
