The iconic "Les Hepper" grandstand at Boyer Oval in New Norfolk, built in the late 1950s, is receiving a makeover.

The renovations - part of Boyer Oval’s ongoing redevelopment, which began in 2024 - have included new changerooms, a function area, and cricket nets.

Boyer Oval, which was built by ANM (Boyer) back in 1945, is around the same size as Melbourne's famous AFL ground, the "MCG".

The oval was built to host football, cricket, soccer, athletics, boxing and even concerts, which also attracted big crowds.

The Les Hepper Stand at Boyer Oval was named in honour of New Norfolk Football Club President Les Hepper, who led the football club from 1954-1974 and also helped design and develop the side’s Clubrooms.

The grandstand has a long and rich history for locals, especially footy fans.

From the 60's to the 90's, during New Norfolk's reign in the TFL, the stand was always packed with supporters on a Saturday.

Staunch is one word to describe New Norfolk supporters, too, and rivalries saw many a grandstand slanging match and an infamous fight that stopped a game between Glenorchy and New Norfolk in 1988.

Over the years, football and cricket continued to be played at Boyer Oval, with the grandstand continuing to support the "Eagles" and Molesworth sporting clubs.

Over time, the stand also deteriorated until it was condemned in 2021.

With a new lease on life, the updated and completed grandstand at Boyer Oval will now give supporters and players a new and better experience, all the while honouring the history of its long and proud existence.

The stand, which is due to be finished before the start of the Eagles' footy season, along with the completion of other projects, will see Boyer Oval back at its best.
