The Derwent Valley Railway (DVR) celebrated its 35th anniversary by officially opening its new community workshop.

The opening also doubled as a graduation ceremony for students who had just completed the inaugural round of the Skills Pathway Program at the site.

The DVR, Southcentral Workforce Network and TasTAFE came together to establish the Skills Pathway Program to provide valuable vocational training and opportunities in the engineering trades sector for eligible students in the valley.

DVR Chairman Nigel Shearer said the graduation of the first trainees marked a pivotal moment in fostering local talent, ensuring the long-term sustainability of skilled trades crucial to local industry and railway operations.

“We are incredibly proud to reach our 35th anniversary, a milestone that reflects the dedication and passion of countless volunteers, supporters and staff over the years,” Mr Shearer said.

“The opening of our new community workshop and the graduation of our first Skills Pathway Program participants represent significant steps forward.

“These initiatives not only enhance our operational capabilities and reinforce our commitment to education and community development but also preserve the rich railway heritage of the Derwent Valley for future generations.”
