Libs promise $1m to upgrade War Memorial Hall

A new life has been proposed for New Norfolk’s War Memorial Hall as an election promise from an elected Coalition Government.
Susie Bower, who’s the Liberal candidate in the Federal seat of Lyons which includes New Norfolk, made the commitment this past week.
Upgrade plans have been ready for the past 30 months.
The War Memorial Hall on Circle Street was built 70 years ago. However, without modern bathrooms, kitchen or disability access, its use is now just a once-a-week rehearsal space for the Derwent Valley Concert Band.
A funding commitment of $1 million was announced by Ms Bower and Senator Jane Hume, the Shadow Minister for Finance.
The goal, said Senator Hume, is to deliver a modern hall that could expand its use for performances but can also be used as an evacuation centre in times of emergency.
“The Derwent Valley has many significant historical buildings,” added Susie Bower, “and the War Memorial Hall … still has some original features today, which is why it’s in urgent need of renovating.”
The hall has its original bathrooms and plumbing. These no longer meets the community’s expectations, nor allow for disability access or other accessibility requirements, which means it is not being used to its full potential.
In addition, the proposed Federal funding will help renovate and restore the kitchen, electrical systems and stage lighting, stage curtains, green room and improvements to the building’s entrance and exterior.
Derwent Valley Council has identified the Memorial Hall project as part of its objective to improve community assets in the Derwent Valley.
