Investment in best genetics

The Den Shorthorns is based at Mole Creek with 70 cows calving in September/October every year. 

About 30 of these are stud cattle that have been acquired over the years from Royalla, Chester, Cherrytree and Dunroan studs, with the commercial cow base heavily influenced by Royalla genetics. 

Over the last five years the stud has invested heavily in securing genetics from leading local and national studs, with walking herd sires purchased from Royston and artificial insemination and embryo transfer programs being undertaken introducing new and proven bloodlines.

Calving is currently taking place and the calves are showing a lot of promise. The commercial calves are sired by Royston Thermal Energy Q25 and The Den Taurus T304 (an ET bred bull that was used within the herd) while stud calves are being born to two home bred sires that are also the result of the ET program. 

They are sired by Byland Flash, an imported sire from America out of Royalla Merendee P161 who was awarded Shorthorn Miss World. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new herd sire from Royalla Shorthorns. 

 A son of Royalla ZZ Top out of Royalla Isobel S028, a Sprys Goldenrod daughter. 

The cow base is run under purely commercial conditions.

Earlier this year we sold our Spring drop calves on Auctionsplus with steers selling from $5.80-$6.10/kg and their heifer counterparts from $5.35-$5.50/kg. Feedback has been positive with cattle growing quickly and being extremely quiet to handle. 

While our focus is mainly commercial, we also like being able to benchmark our cattle against other breeders around the local show circuit. 

This spring we will be exhibiting two heifers. These are both sired by Royston Thermal Energy Q25 out of Chester females and we look forward to seeing their results. 

We will also be entering four autumn 2025 drop Shorthorn steers into the Sheffield Show Hoof & Hook competition. 

We have a small number of select herd bulls available for purchase in time for spring joinings. 

These bulls are either AI or ET bred and present as very balanced bulls with good figures. They are priced from $5000 + GST, and are available for inspection by appointment.
