Derwent Valley residents were woken this morning by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 6.38am in the state's Southwest, with the epicentre at Strathgordon at a depth of 14.1 km.

Residents from areas including Lawitta, Glenora, Bushy Park and from New Norfolk through to Maydena reported the rude awakening.

The earthquake was said to have hit on a known fault line near Edgar Dam and Scott's Peak Dam, with people statewide reporting they felt its effects.

Seismic monitoring systems as far away as Canberra recorded tremors which has generated hundreds of reports and counting from people describing what they experienced.

Many said at first it sounded like a thunderstorm, but soon realised it was different after their houses started shaking with windows and doors rattling for around five to eight seconds.

No damage has been reported from this morning's quake so far.
