Farming’s quiet innovators

ACROSS Australian agriculture, innovation often happens quietly.

It isn’t always driven by large-scale change or breakthrough technology. More often, it’s found in the practical improvements farmers and growers make every season, finding better ways to manage water, improve efficiency, strengthen productivity and care for the land for future generations. These decisions are helping shape a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector, yet many of the people behind them rarely seek recognition.

Across the industry, farmers and growers continue to adopt new irrigation technologies, refine water management practices and improve environmental outcomes. While these improvements may happen incrementally, together they are delivering significant benefits for Australian agriculture and demonstrating the important role innovation plays in securing the future of farming.

Recognising and celebrating these achievements is the focus of the 2026 Zimmatic Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards, supported by Lindsay. The awards acknowledge farmers and farming businesses demonstrating excellence in sustainable irrigation, innovation and responsible water management across Australia.

All agronomists, advisors, industry representatives, neighbours or members of the local community are encouraged to nominate someone.

For many nominees, simply knowing their efforts have been recognised by others is one of the most rewarding aspects of the program. Farmers are also welcome to enter themselves to take advantage of this opportunity.

For those who choose to complete an award entry, the process also provides an opportunity to reflect on their irrigation practices, share their experiences and contribute practical knowledge that benefits the wider industry.
