Hey! Hay season comes to an end

Huge stacks of hay are now safely stashed in the corners of paddocks and in sheds with a healthy supply available from a kind season.

Increasing rain quietened demand but Elders hay trader Hayden Bean said it’s not far off kicking into gear.

“There’s not a lot of premium product around but in general it’s been a good yield,” he said.

For those who cut silage early the moisture content is quite high and for those who left it later they struggled to get in cut in the windows between wet weather.

“Buyers need to make sure they have a good look at the product before they purchase and also make sure bales are weed-free.”

Mr Bean said that getting hay that’s currently stored on farm to where it needs to go is likely to cost more than anticipated with rising fuel prices.

“I feel for the dairy farmers in particular because cows have still got to eat but they can’t put the price up on the milk,” he said.

Elders has bought 5000 bales, all stacked and capped around the state ready for distribution as needed with much of it already sold.
