Murray Greys in demand
THE Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale sale offering was 40 bulls and 36 females and there was a total clearance, with two animals sold after the sale.
The bidding for the bulls began with a flourish and continued throughout the sale.
“It was a very pleasing sale to sit through, and we certainly appreciated the support we received,” Woodbourne owner Charles Wallace said.
Thirty-two Woodbourn animals will be travelling interstate with 11 heading for WA. 14 to Victoria, two to SA and three to NSW. The remainder were well supported by Tasmanian breeders.
Bulls topped at $23,000 and averaged $11,105, adult females were sold to $9000 and averaged $5777, stud heifers toped at $7250 and averaged $3979 with commercial heifers averaging $3566.
The top-priced bull was purchased by Keach Pastoral, Cressy, and the top-priced cow with a calf at foot was purchased for $9000 by Takas Pastoral, Bylands, Victoria.
There were some volume buyers on the day, with Redpasture Beef taking home five bulls. McLennan Holding bought two bulls and nine heifers.
Other multiple buyers were MJ and AV Smith of Telegraph, NE Tasmania, Pyengana Premium Meats of Pyengana, Surprise Bay Pastoral, King Island, all with two bulls each.
A newcomer to Woodbourn, Windy Lea Trust, also took home two bulls.
Return mainland purchasers were Greenhills Murray Greys, Minhamite, BW Farm Trust also of Minhamite and David Hamiton of Strathbogie, who all took home two bulls.
Multiple female buyers were Takas Pastoral, Bylands, Victoria, with three, Bottlesford Murray Greys, two, and a new buyer Girrahween Greys bought a bull and a female.
Other Tasmania multiple buyers of both bulls and females were Emily Padman, Sheffield; Sheffield School; Lenna Family Trust, Hagley; G and S Flowers, Meander; D and V Grey, Lower Barrington; Hayden Saunders, Stowport; and RJ and PM McNeil, Elliott.
“The strength of the commercial interest within Tasmania was amazing,” Mr Wallace said.
The top price bull went into a commercial herd building its female numbers and the under bidder has a herd of 500 commercial cows. Many females went commercially as did a large number of bulls.
