Pet bird owners urged to provide Biosecurity Tasmania details on animal whereabouts

Biosecurity Tasmania is urging pet and domestic bird owners to provide details of where their birds are kept in response to H5 bird flu.

State Controller Justin Helmich said the voluntary registration will help Biosecurity Tasmania communicate directly with bird owners and support disease tracing efforts if further H5 bird flu detections occur.

"H5 bird flu is present in Tasmania, and we expect to see more detections in new areas of the state," Mr Helmich said.

"Providing your details now will help us contact bird owners to provide important updates and practical advice about H5 bird flu and any measures that may affect bird owners in Tasmania.

“This is an opportunity for bird owners to help take action and strengthen Tasmania’s biosecurity.”

"The information provided through this voluntary registration will help us communicate quickly with owners in areas where there are further detections and support disease tracing if an outbreak occurs."

Commercial poultry producers do not need to participate.
