Easter is the second biggest period of the year for the consumption of ‘real’ eggs.

Egg Farmers of Australia CEO Melinda Hashimoto said as Easter fast approaches, fresh eggs were proving just as popular as the chocolate kind.

“While kids love their chocolate eggs at Easter, Australian consumers also stock up on the ‘real’ thing as they prepare food for family gatherings over the four-day long weekend,” she said.

About a quarter of a billion real eggs are eaten across the Easter period in Australia, making Easter the second biggest egg consumption period of the year after Christmas.

“Many households use real hen eggs in their Easter meal preparations. But some cultures also decorate real eggs as a craft. The delicate shells can be dyed, hand painted or dipped in coloured wax as a symbol of the Easter story,” Ms Hashimoto said.

The CEO said real commercial eggs were in plentiful supply across all states of Australia this season. But like many Australian farmers, egg producers are facing increasing costs as the price of fuel, interest rates and other farm inputs continue to rise.

Ms Hashimoto said Easter provided a much-needed sales boost for egg producers who supply around 6.8 billion eggs to Aussie families each year. On average, every Australian eats up to 16kg of fresh eggs annually.
