Concerns have been raised about the Tasmanian Government's plans regarding a $7.8 million commitment to enhance Mount Field National Park.

The funding has been earmarked to enhance the area as an "all year round" tourist destination.

Concerns have been expressed about the long-term impacts on this iconic area, which was founded in 1916 and is one of Tasmania's oldest national parks.

Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said the upgrades were not necessary.

"The Visitor Centre and National Park’s advice and support is fantastic,” Cr Dracoulis said.

“The facilities are good, visitation is already high, and from what I can see, Mount Field is ticking along quite nicely as it is.”

"National parks are not theme parks and they are not blank canvases for development but are living landscapes held in trust for future generations.

"While references to improved signage, track upgrades and visitor safety are easy to support, accommodation development inside a national park raises serious questions, particularly when details remain unclear and consultation with local communities appears absent.”

Tasmanian Minister for Parks and Environment Nick Duigan defended the proposed development.

“Data from 2023-24 highlighted steady and sustainable growth in the area, and it's vital that we continue to invest in our parks and reserves so these treasured and iconic places can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Leave Mt Field way it is, don’t spoil our natural forest, untouchable water. This does not need more development to commercial to make a precious asset to made into profit and total ruin the environment. It’s beautiful way it is.
