Derwent Valley Council opens Millbrook Rise EOI process
At a general meeting last week, the Derwent Valley Council supported progressing with an expression of Interest process for the redevelopment of land at Millbrook Rise.
Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Home on the hill above the land entering New Norfolk was opened in February 1934 to cater for returning service people who suffered the trauma of war.
The land below and adjacent to the boat ramp/river has now been identified for potential development, with river access and recreation highlighted, as well as the huge potential for particular projects to increase tourism and economic benefits to the community.
The same land beside the present boat ramp was originally the home of the New Norfolk Golf Club's 9-hole golf course.
The course was built not long after Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Home opened, and it was maintained by the staff of Lachlan Park Hospital/Willow Court.
Lots of willow trees were planted and every year reduced to a stump as their long willow canes were harvested to be taken to Hobart to be made into baskets and other cane products for which Bridges Bros became famous.
Fast-forward to now, and the unused land at Millbrook Rise has suffered neglect.
Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said the land could bring new tourism, recreation and economic activity to the region
"What this process has done is open the door to thoughtful proposals that could help transform a prime position into something that adds value for both locals and visitors - whether through accommodation, visitor experiences, improved amenities, or other site-responsive ideas."
"For too long, this beautiful spot has only benefited two cows and a handful of lonely roosters, and now we have the chance for something better."
“This isn’t the final decision on any development, but it’s the beginning of a fair and transparent process to test ideas, gauge interest, and see what opportunities may exist.
"The EOI will be publicly advertised in a few weeks, but anyone with a good idea can reach out to the CEO to discuss the process in the meantime.”
