Hamilton Show, a real rural show
Attendees are in for a real rural treat at the 2026 Hamilton Show, this Saturday the 14th of March.
The show and area has a rich history in Tasmania, which is evident in an old photo taken from the 1950s.
In the photo, taken at the entrance to the Hamilton showgrounds an overhead sign reads "The Hamilton Show - Rodeo and Wool Exhibition". That reflects a historical "Wild West" country connection and similar traditions continue today.
Everything horse, cattle, sheep and wool, farm and food are all showcased. Things like sheep shearing, bullock working, watching working yard dogs and dog high jump competitions, equestrian events and introductions to some local reptiles/snakes and goats, chainsaw sculpting, a ute competition and clay target shooting. The kids can pet animals, play sideshow games and go on rides plus get everyone's favourite - showbags . Back that with live entertainment from Blake Evans starting at 12pm plus the plethora of fresh local food, drink, art and handicrafts and you know our early settlers would be sitting back proud.
Dating back, the Hamilton show is said to have originated after soldier settlers brought up the idea at a meeting most likely discussing it after a hard day's work and a beer. The first official show was held in the Spring of 1952 but it had to be changed to an Autumn event due to the high workloads of committee members during the growing season. Natural disaster issues back in the day like the flooding of 1960 and bushfires in 1967 also stopped the show and so did pandemic illnesses. They do say that "The show must go on" and that's the case here because there's only a handful of times this event hasn't been run in its long history.
The Hamilton Show continues to provide enjoyment and entertainment to communities of the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands which will no doubt be evident again this Saturday.
Tickets to this year's Hamilton show can be purchased at the gate or online with prices at Family- $25.00 Adults- $10.00 Youths-$10.00 and Children under 14-$5.00 .Gates are open from 8 am - 4 pm.
