A new winner has been etched onto the Vitale Barberis Canonico Wool Trophy.

The Scott Family from Snowhill won the trophy for the best wool fleece, 18.5 microns or finer.

The Grand Champion fleece was awarded to Trefusis, marking the 11th time they have won the award.

Its submission in the superfine merino class saw it awarded a 10 out of 10 for soundness; an eight for trueness to type, uniformity of length, character and evenness; and a seven for colour or bloom.

For its top-and-noil product, the fleece scored 28 out of 30.

Its yield was 73 per cent, and it weighed 7.2kg.

Trefusis’ fleece scored an 85 out of 100.

Meanwhile, Broad Valley Farm took out the most valuable fleece.

Madeleine Scott from Snowhill said it was incredible to take out the trophy.

“We were up against some extraordinary fleeces, so it's such an honour,” she said.

“Some of those flecces, you won’t see better anywhere else, except perhaps Bendigo.

“The quality was really high, and it’s a real credit to all the growers.”

Daughter Matilda said the win was a culmination of a year’s worth of hard work.

“We grew out the wool and sheared it, and then selected the best ones to enter in the competition.”

The Scott Family purchased Snowhill, located at Royal George, in 2023.

The family also owns Myrtlewood in the Northern Midlands.

“We are really passionate about what we’re doing there and absolutely love the sheep that we are fortunate to run in that country,” Madeleine said.
